Description

Anyone familiar with Japanese mythology knows Amaterasu as the sun goddess of Shinto and one of the central figures in the Japanese creation narrative. This calligraphy takes up her name in powerful, flowing brushstrokes and turns it into an artistic motif in its own right. The characters are executed in the Sōsho style, the cursive script of Japanese calligraphy.

Individual strokes merge into one another, creating a dynamic movement that conveys to the viewer the energy and meaning of the written word directly. Especially with religious or mythological terms, calligraphers often chose a particularly lively brushwork to lend the statement additional weight.

The Kakemono comes in its own wooden box, which serves for the safe storage and protection of the scroll. For collectors of Japanese calligraphy or lovers of Shinto symbolism, this work is an appealing addition, distinguished both by its content and by its artistic quality.
