Description

Two columns of powerfully composed characters render a short poem that speaks of bamboo beneath the window and a diary lying on a cushion – an image of quiet, domestic scholarship.

The brushwork combines thick, saturated basic strokes with faster, finer connecting lines, revealing the practiced hand of a writer well versed in brush and paper. A small red seal at the left edge completes the composition. The poem describes a scene of secluded scholarly life, in which reading and the observation of nature – symbolized here by the bamboo – merge into a unity.

Hanging scrolls of calligraphy with poetic content such as this were popular furnishings in the studies of educated Japanese and still stand today for a life devoted to leisure and reflection.
