Description

A warm, milky-white glaze pattern with strong orange-red fire marks plays across this chawan, immediately revealing the vibrancy characteristic of Shino ware. The slightly irregular, organically shaped body with its undulating rim gives the vessel a pleasant, earthy tactility, while a finely incised plant motif animates the surface in a subtle way.

The glaze shifts in gentle transitions from creamy white to deep rust brown, resulting from the characteristic reaction of the feldspar glaze in wood firing. It is precisely in this interplay of chance and control that the particular appeal of the Shino tradition lies, which has ranked among the most esteemed styles of Japanese tea ceramics since the Momoyama period.

This chawan is the work of Sawada Shuichi and is delivered in a wooden box signed by the potter, which further underscores its authenticity and its value for collectors. As a handcrafted unique work, it is excellently suited for preparing matcha, with its porous, warm surface lending the ritual a particularly atmospheric quality.
