Description
The calm, earthy presence of classic Shino ware unfolds in this chawan by Masao Nakajima in a particularly expressive way. Shino-yaki, one of the most tradition-rich ceramics categories of Japan from the Mino region, is characterized by its warm, often feldspar-bearing glaze, which forms fine cracks and natural textures during firing. Masao Nakajima, a recognized master of this technique, creates hand-formed pieces that combine the rustic beauty of the material with a deliberate artistic design. His use of stamps and reliefs lends the works an additional dimension that evokes old village structures or traditional Japanese architecture, enriching the simplicity of the Shino aesthetic with a narrative note.
The vessel shows a compact, slightly bulging shape with an irregularly formed, wide rim that offers a pleasant, natural feel when held. The surface is covered with a deep, rust-brown glaze that transitions into gray and whitish tones in some places and shows fine craquelé cracks. Particularly striking are the stamped, relief motifs in the form of traditional Japanese houses with characteristic roofs, which wind around the body of the chawan like a quiet village landscape. These white outlines stand out in high contrast against the dark ground, lending the piece an almost sculptural, narrative quality.
As a handcrafted unique work by a talented Shino master, this chawan is presented in a signed wooden box, underscoring its authenticity and value for collectors. It is excellently suited for preparing matcha, where the warm, porous texture, the earthy coloring, and the relief motifs enrich the ritual and create a deep connection to Japanese tradition.
