Description

The five powerful characters "Mu-shin ki dai-dō" (No-Mind on the Great Way) trace across the pale paper in energetic, flowing strokes, radiating a deep, immediate presence. The thick, dynamic brushstroke reveals traces of ink and movement, while the generous empty space lets the words breathe and reinforces their message. This calligraphy embodies a central Zen wisdom: the state of "mu-shin," in which the mind is free of distractions and the natural, great way can unfold.

The work bears the signature and seal of Kobayashi Taigen, a contemporary Zen master and calligrapher who serves as abbot of Obai-in at Daitoku-ji temple in Kyoto. In the Heisei era and beyond, he maintains the tradition of Zen calligraphy with a direct, powerful mode of expression that is often used in meditation rooms, tea ceremonies, and spiritual occasions. His works combine technical mastery with spiritual depth and invite the viewer to their own inner stillness.

Written on paper, the calligraphy displays an intense blackness of ink with fine gradations and spontaneous accents that capture the vividness of the moment. The wooden jikusaki frame the piece traditionally and warmly, and it is presented with a signed wooden box. This hand-written unique work brings the clear, meditative power of the Zen tradition into any room and is especially suited to those who value Japanese calligraphy as a source of mindfulness and inspiration.
