Description

The characters "Mu-ji kore ki-jin" (無事是貴人) extend across the pale paper in powerful, flowing strokes and radiate a calm, unshakable strength. Each brushstroke is deliberately placed, with visible dynamics and subtle ink gradations that make the spontaneous yet deeply considered moment of writing palpable. The generous empty space around the characters heightens their presence and invites the viewer to let the message take effect in silence.

The calligraphy embodies a classic Zen wisdom: "To be without concerns, that is the noble person." It stems from the Zen tradition and means that true freedom does not arise from outer success or possessions, but from a mind free of entanglements, plans, and distractions. The "ki-jin" (noble person) lives in natural serenity, unburdened by everyday life – a state often described in Zen practice as the ideal of inner independence. Such sayings served monks and practitioners as a daily reminder of mindfulness and detachment.

The work bears the signature and seal of Yamaguchi Daichi, a calligrapher of the Showa period, who devoted himself to traditional Zen calligraphy. In this era, many artists cultivated the direct, expressive brushwork of the old masters and created works that served as spiritual inspiration in tea rooms, meditation halls, or private collections. Written on paper, the calligraphy displays an intense ink blackness with vivid accents. The jikusaki made of wood frame the piece warmly and traditionally, and it comes with a signed wooden box. This handwritten unique work brings the clear, liberating message of Zen into the room and is especially suited for lovers of Japanese calligraphy who value spiritual depth and meditative elegance.
