Description

Between slender blades of grass swaying in the wind, a small rhinoceros beetle has settled – an unassuming detail from nature, captured with great powers of observation. The few, precisely placed brushstrokes of the grasses and the fine ink drawing of the beetle attest to the reduced yet technically accomplished pictorial language of their creator.

Such small-format nature studies, known in Japan as shasei, celebrate the beauty of the unassuming and invite meditative, slow contemplation. The clear composition with much deliberately left-open space further heightens the effect of the single motif.

The painting bears the signature and seal of Ishikawa Yurin (1870–1952) and was created in the Shôwa period. Painted on paper and fitted with a jikusaki of wood, this hand-painted unique work is a stylish example of Japanese nature-observation art for lovers of small, fine details.
