Kakemono Hibiscus Flowers and Grasshopper

Large, pale blue hibiscus flowers open amid lush, gray-green leaves, while a single grasshopper rests on a leaf, animating the scene with calm presence. The composition relies on subtle gradations of color and a sparing use of detail, so that the flower calyxes and foliage appear almost weightless. This motif captures the quiet beauty of a summer day and conveys an atmosphere of serenity and natural harmony.

The kakemono bears the signature and seal of Kawasaki Shoko, an artist of the Showa period who devoted himself to traditional flower and insect painting (kachō-ga with insects). During this period, many painters valued the fine observation of nature and translated it into reduced yet expressive compositions that invite the viewer to mindfulness. Kawasaki Shoko is known for his clear line work and the harmonious balance of color and empty space.

Painted on paper, the work unfolds a cool yet vivid palette of gray and blue tones that lends the texture of the petals and the veining of the leaves a particularly plastic quality. The jikusaki made of bone lend the piece an elegant, traditional mounting. It comes with a signed wooden box. This hand-painted unique work brings the meditative calm of Japanese nature depictions into the room and is especially suited for enthusiasts who appreciate subtle elegance and the beauty of simple motifs.
