Description

Three doves populate this kakemono, their differing postures lending the scene a natural liveliness: one stands attentively elevated on a small mound of earth, while the other two appear to be searching for food deeper in the grass.

The dense plumage is painted in fine gray tones with soft transitions, giving the birds a sculptural, almost tangible presence. In the background, loosely placed branches with blossoms suggest the season, while grasses lighten the foreground.

The composition follows the classical kachō-ga tradition, the Japanese bird-and-flower painting that has combined observation of nature with decorative pictorial effect for centuries. In East Asian symbolism, doves are regarded as a sign of peace and family cohesion, which is why depictions such as this one were often given as a gesture of goodwill.

For friends of Japanese nature painting, this kakemono, with its calm, harmonious scene, is an appealing choice.
