Description

An impressive example of classical Japanese painting that captures the harmony between animal and nature in masterful stillness. A heron stands on a rocky outcrop with its head attentively raised, its long neck emphasizing the elegant verticality of the composition. Behind it, delicate chrysanthemums unfold – a symbol of longevity and autumn – their fine lines and muted colors forming a subtle contrast to the bird's strong black.

The work is painted on paper, with jikusaki made of wood, and dates from the Meiji period. The attribution to Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783–1856) points to the tradition of Nanga painting, characterized by its poetic view of nature and calligraphic lightness. Although the painting is stylistically close to Baiitsu's work, it is likely a later homage – an expression of the master's continuing influence on Japanese art of the 19th century.

The warm, aged coloring underscores the timelessness of the motif and lends the depiction a quiet, contemplative atmosphere.
