Description

Motionless and composed, a white heron stands in the midst of a quiet waterside area. With its neck slightly drawn in and a gathered posture, the bird appears absorbed in a moment of deep stillness. Around it unfolds a delicate shoreline vegetation: broad leaves, slender blades of grass, and a branch with bright pink blossoms leaning over the heron, lending the picture a faint touch of color.

The color palette is deliberately restrained and of great harmony – pale green and gray tones in the background, the flawless white of the heron, accentuated by the warm pink tones of the blossoms. The composition combines precision in the depiction of the animal with the airy openness of the picture ground, thus following a long tradition of Japanese bird-and-flower painting.

The painting bears the signature and seal of Koyama Setsurei (小山雪亭) and was created in the Showa period. Executed on silk, with jikusaki made of bone and accompanied by a signed wooden box, this hand-painted unique work presents itself as a coherent overall ensemble of high quality.
