Description

Two white herons captured in reduced ink painting – the calmness of these birds and their elegant plumage are among the most popular motifs of classical Japanese bird painting.

The hanging scroll bears the signature and seal of Kishi Renzan. With a few, precisely placed lines, the plumage and posture of the animals take shape, while the picture ground remains largely empty, giving the birds their quiet, almost meditative presence. This restraint is characteristic of the Kishi school, known for its lifelike yet elegant depiction of animals.

The work is delivered including a wooden box, which serves to protect and properly store the hanging scroll. In Japan, herons are considered a symbol of purity and longevity, which is why depictions like this one are often chosen for festive occasions or as lasting decoration for the tokonoma.
