Kakemono Plum Blossom in Snow

Between snow-covered roofs and snow-covered hills, delicate pink plum blossoms bloom in this kakemono – a classic motif that captures the contrast between winter cold and the first awakening of spring. A small village with thatched-roof houses and a simple gate lies embedded in the snowy scenery.

The brushwork alternates between soft, washed-out gray tones for snow and sky, and finer accents in pink and green for the blossom branches. This contrast between a subdued winter landscape and blooming nature is one of the most popular pictorial themes in Japanese painting, as it symbolically captures the transition of the seasons.

Plum blossoms are regarded in Japan as a symbol of endurance and renewal, as they bloom even before the actual start of spring and often in the snow. For lovers of atmospheric winter landscapes with a touch of hope, this kakemono, Plum Blossom in Snow, is a particularly appealing choice.
