Description

Emerging delicately from the light-toned background, a plum branch stretches diagonally through the composition. The pink and purple blossoms are set in fine gradations, some transparent, some with denser application of color, so that they appear to float. On a lower branch sits a small bird, calm and attentive, its head tilted slightly. Its plainly rendered plumage forms a quiet counterpoint to the lively abundance of blossoms and draws the eye into the intimate center of the scene.

The effect of the image arises from restraint and rhythm. Empty areas are deliberately employed, giving the branches room to breathe. The ink lines of the branches vary between softly flowing washes and clear accents, creating an impression that is natural, almost breathing. The bird seems to be part of this stillness, not as a narrative center, but as a quiet companion to the changing of the seasons.

The work was executed on paper and dates from the Shōwa period. The seal points to Tokuoka Shinsen. A jikusaki of wood and a signed wooden box complement the kakemono, underscoring its careful presentation and the respectful handling of this poetic depiction of nature.
