Description

Two hanging scrolls that complement each other beautifully in their quiet poetry: one shows a small sparrow perched on a thin stem, while below it a lushly blooming wisteria with its violet clusters of blossoms and dense leaves is captured in bold ink. The second painting captures a bird in a moment of movement: hanging upside down from a slender willow branch, wings spread, surrounded by the soft lines of drooping branches with young buds. Together the two works speak of the changing seasons and the quiet vitality of nature.

The composition thrives on the deliberate use of empty space: wide, breathing surfaces let the delicate depictions of the birds and the confidently rendered plants stand out all the more effectively. The combination of delicate coloring and assured ink technique lends both paintings a remarkable freshness.

Both paintings bear the signature and seal of Nakahara Yōtō and were created on paper during the Meiji period. Fitted with jikusaki of ceramics, a light green brocade mounting, and a signed wooden box, these hand-painted unique works form a cohesive ensemble for lovers of classical Japanese bird-and-flower painting.
