Description

Two crayfish, with long, curving antennae and finely articulated shells, appear to glide past one another in the water – a lively detail study that reveals the keen powers of observation of the painter.

Strong, dark lines render the segmented shells and small claws, while accents of red on the heads and limbs breathe additional life into the crayfish. The fine antennae, drawn across the picture surface like threads, lend the composition a graphic lightness that contrasts with the physical fullness of the shells.

In Japanese symbolism, crayfish motifs are considered, among other things, bringers of good fortune and are often depicted on festive occasions such as the New Year.
