Description
With loose, broad ink strokes, this kakemono depicts two bulls whose massive bodies and powerful horns lend the composition an earthbound, calm presence. While the front animal is led with lowered head and a rope through its nose, the one behind gazes attentively to the side.
The shimmering shades of gray that blend into one another and in places appear almost like fur are typical of the wet-on-wet technique of ink painting, in which the moisture of the paper is deliberately used to create soft transitions. The sparse yet precisely placed lines for horns, eyes, and legs give the animals a convincing plasticity despite the reduced means.
Oxen and bulls have long been regarded in East Asian culture as symbols of diligence, frugality, and rustic groundedness. For collectors of classical animal painting with a calm, meditative character, this kakemono is an atmospheric choice.
