Description

A Chinese Bodhisattva figure made of bronze, whose calm, meditative face, tall five-pointed crown and rich strands of pearls and jewels on the chest take up the classic iconography of seated Bodhisattva depictions in the Sino-Tibetan style.

Judging by the patina, the hand-crafted one-of-a-kind piece dates from around the 1920s. The lotus-shaped pedestal on which the figure sits is designed with fine, sculpturally worked petals and lends the entire composition additional presence. The heavy, solid bronze and the carefully worked drapery folds speak for a high-quality creation that was made not as mass-produced ware, but as an individually cast piece.

With its decorative effect and considerable weight, this Bodhisattva figure is an impressive element for collectors of classical East Asian bronze art, whether as a religious object or a purely aesthetic eye-catcher.
