Description

This exquisite kakemono from the Meiji period depicts a kingfisher clinging to a lotus stem below; above it spreads a large lotus leaf, beside it a curled bud, while a withered seed pod on a curving stem adorns the upper part of the image. The delicate depiction of the plant and the bird radiates a peaceful stillness and natural elegance. The artistic depiction of the lotus, a symbol of purity and renewal, stands in harmonious accord with the finely executed kingfisher.

The artwork is a special collaboration between several artists. It bears five signatures with seals, each an artist's name, among them 祥雲 (Shōun); the others read approximately 秋湖, 〇栗, 〇園 and 〇蕉, though some readings are uncertain. The artists have combined their skills in this unique work, creating an image that is both harmonious and multifaceted. Each artist has left their own stamp, shaping the distinctive character of this piece.

Painted on fine rice paper and fitted with a jikusaki made of wood, this kakemono radiates a timeless aesthetic. It is a valuable collector's item for lovers of Japanese art and a tribute to the collaboration of great artists.
