Description

Two characters, brushed in soft, flowing movements, bring to full expression on this kakemono a Zen word that begins with 無 (mu, “not, without”). The brush glides across the paper with palpable calm, without any haste, and it is precisely in the fading strokes that a sense of inner serenity emerges. In Zen Buddhism, the character 無 is not regarded as a mere negation, but points to a state of mental clarity and freedom from attachment attained through meditation and mindfulness. A calligraphy with this meaning is therefore especially suited to spaces of contemplation and retreat.

The work bears the signature and seal of Inoue Shundo and was created in the Meiji period. Written on paper and fitted with a jikusaki of wood, this hand-written unique work is a quiet, powerful expression of Japanese Zen art.
