Description

Anyone familiar with Japanese mythology knows Amaterasu as the sun goddess of Shinto and one of the central figures in the Japanese creation narrative. This calligraphy presents the divine formula 天照皇大神宮 (Tenshō Kōtai Jingū), the name under which Amaterasu is venerated at the Inner Shrine of Ise, in powerful, clearly set brushstrokes and turns it into an artistic motif in its own right. Scrolls bearing this formula were hung for the worship of the Ise deity. The characters are executed in the Kaisho style, the regular script of Japanese calligraphy, each one clearly set apart. Beside them is the signature 荒木田神主謹書 ("respectfully written by the priest Arakida"), which names as the writer a Shinto priest (kannushi) of the Arakida family, the priestly lineage of the Inner Shrine of Ise.

The broad, rich strokes create a calm strength that conveys to the viewer the energy and meaning of the written word directly. Especially with religious or mythological terms, calligraphers often chose a particularly powerful brushwork to lend the statement additional weight.

The Kakemono comes in its own wooden box, which serves for the safe storage and protection of the scroll. For collectors of Japanese calligraphy or lovers of Shinto symbolism, this work is an appealing addition, distinguished both by its content and by its artistic quality.
