Description

A quiet, almost wintry calm settles over this hanging scroll: a gnarled branch covered in frost or snow stretches across the lower half of the image, while two crows take flight in the foreground and a small flock crosses the misty river in the distance.

The high-contrast depiction of the pitch-black birds against the pale, gold-toned sky creates a striking tension and deliberately draws the eye to the movement within the image. In the Japanese pictorial tradition, crows are regarded as intelligent, often slightly eerie messengers, lending the otherwise quiet winter landscape an additional narrative layer that invites prolonged viewing.

The painting is done on silk, fitted with a jikusaki made of bone, and dates from the Meiji period. The mounting of the hanging scroll shows some minor damage due to age, which, however, does not diminish the expressive power of this antique piece. For collectors of evocative winter landscapes, this work is an appealing, authentic addition.
