Description
A powerful koi braces itself with full force against the current, leaping up a waterfall, its body curved in dynamic upward motion, its fins spread wide. The scales shimmer in fine gray and blue tones, the eyes alert and resolutely turned upward. In the background, narrow, vertical threads of water fall in delicate gray gradations, framing the fish without obscuring it. In Japanese tradition, this iconic depiction symbolizes perseverance, success, and the overcoming of great obstacles – the koi that becomes a dragon, a motif deeply rooted in legend and culture.
The kakemono bears the signature and seal of Kishira and presumably dates from the Meiji period. In this transitional era, many painters combined the classical Nihonga tradition with heightened attention to detail and emotional expressiveness, resulting in especially vivid and inspiring depictions. Kishira's works are characterized by masterful gradations of ink that make the movement and vitality of the koi palpable.
Painted on silk, the unique work unfolds a nuanced, cool color palette that brings the sheen of the scales, the tension of the fins, and the flowing power of the water to life through subtle shading. The jikusaki made of bone lend the piece a refined, authentic mounting. It comes with a signed wooden box. This hand-painted kakemono brings the legendary symbolism of the ascending koi into the room and is especially suited for lovers of Japanese animal and water painting who value technical refinement, dynamic composition, and profound meaning.
