Description

Watchful and with wide-open eyes, a spotted owl with distinctive feather tufts looks down from a gnarled branch, while in the background an autumn-colored twig lightens the pictorial field. The fine, dotted plumage rendering and the shimmering brown tones lend the nocturnal bird a mysterious yet dignified presence – a motif that does justice to the owl as a symbol of wisdom and protection.

The hand-painting was created on fine silk and dates from the Shôwa period; the carefully executed feather rendering suggests an experienced painter of the kachô-ga tradition. The hanging scroll is delivered including the accompanying wooden box, which served for proper storage and protection of the artwork.

With its calm, slightly mystical presence, this kakemono is particularly well suited as an atmospheric accent in the tokonoma or study. For collectors of Japanese animal painting, this hand-painted unique work with its striking owl motif is an appealing addition.
