Description

With his gaze directed sideways and upward, the figure in this kakemono stands composed – a bearded sage with a topknot, whose wide, plainly kept robe is rendered in a few confident brushstrokes. In front of his chest he holds a peach with leaves, the peach of immortality; iconographically this points to Tōbōsaku (東方朔), the sage of Chinese legend who stole the peaches of immortality. The restraint of the composition draws the eye entirely to the calm, inward-turned posture of the figure.

The folds of the robe are indicated with thin, even linework, while the peach at chest height is set off in lighter ink tones. This kind of reduced depiction, concentrated on the essential, is characteristic of figure painting after Chinese models, in which inner bearing matters more than outward embellishment.

Depictions of sages with the peach of immortality were often valued as auspicious images wishing for a long life. For collectors of Japanese figure painting, this kakemono, titled Sage with the Peach of Immortality, is a calm and quietly elegant addition.
