Description
The finely grained surface of this bulbous vase shimmers in a sandy pink, over which a branch of blooming plum blossoms winds in warm rust brown with delicate white and yellow blossom centers. The impasto, almost relief-like painting technique gives the blossoms a sculptural effect that appears especially vivid in contrast to the grainy, matte body — a small gold embossed seal attests to the careful handwork.
In Japanese art, the plum blossom is regarded as a symbol of hope and renewal, since it is the first blossom of the year, appearing while winter still holds. Combined with the rustic, round form of this vase, an appealing dialogue emerges between the earthbound Shigaraki ware and the delicate symbolism of the painted motif. The wide, slightly irregular rim opens the view to the dark-glazed inner wall. The vase bears the signature of the potter Kaoru Ohara.
The piece is delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter, providing safe and dignified storage. This Shigaraki ware vase, the Shigaraki Ware Vase by Kaoru Ohara with Plum Blossom Branch, combines handcrafted power with a poetic motif and is a versatile decorative piece for lovers of traditional Japanese ceramics (pottery).
