Description

Delicate and yet full of expressive power, a quiet scene unfolds on this hanging scroll from the Meiji period: a small bird sits on a fine grapevine, among scattered leaves and a few fruits. The generous use of empty space draws the eye entirely to the delicate balance between bird and plant, lending the work a meditative clarity.

Rendered on silk and fitted with jikusaki made of bone, the painting bears the signature and seal of Mori Getsujo. With sparing brushstrokes and deliberately placed accents of color, the artist succeeds in creating a sense of vitality combined with quiet restraint. In particular, the colored berries, which stand out against the warm base tone, lend the depiction a subtle contrast.

Thus, this work unites observation of nature, lightness, and poetic depth in harmonious fashion. It is an example of Japanese painting that impresses not through abundance but through deliberate reduction – a piece that appeals to collectors and lovers of classical aesthetics alike.
