Description
A small sparrow has settled among the densely leaved, autumn-colored branches of a sturdy tree trunk, looking attentively into the picture. The finely rendered orange and rust-colored leaves contrast appealingly with the trunk, kept in subdued gray and brown tones, creating a calm, warm autumnal mood that captures the brief moment of the little bird's rest.
The hanging scroll bears the signature and seal of the painter Hiroshi Utsumi and was hand-painted on silk during the Shôwa period. The fine, naturalistic execution of the plumage and foliage attests to the artist's keen powers of observation.
As an evocative autumn motif, this kakemono is particularly well suited for display in the tokonoma during the cooler season, but it also convinces year-round with its calm, nature-bound pictorial language. For collectors of classical Japanese bird painting, this hand-painted unique work is a charming detail for any collection.
