Description

With a granular stoneware surface and lively decoration, this set of two tokkuri represents the renowned Kutani tradition. Bold blackish-brown leaf shapes, white glaze splashes and broad gold strokes lie on a grey, coarse-grained glaze, while the unglazed, sandy clay of the bases reveals the earthy character of the stoneware.

Kutani ware traces its history back to the 17th century and is still regarded today as one of the most esteemed ceramic traditions of Japan. Owning two matching bottles reflects the traditional Japanese appreciation for pairs and symmetry when enjoying sake together. This set is the work of Nakamura Baizan and comes in a wooden box signed by the master potter. Both tokkuri are handcrafted unique works of high artistic quality.
