Description

A small hare sits motionless in a snow-covered pine landscape, painted with restrained ink work and delicate accents of color in green. The bare, white surface of the paper is skillfully used to represent snow, while pine branches and shrubs lean over it, lending depth to the scene.

The motif of the hare in winter is a popular symbol in Japanese painting for watchfulness and the quiet beauty of the cold season. The signature at the lower edge of the picture points to the careful work of a skilled painter of the Meiji period. The jikusaki at the ends of the roller rods is made of bone, a detail that lends the kakemono a distinctive, antiquarian character.

This hanging scroll is delivered in its own wooden box. For collectors of wintery motifs and traditional Japanese depictions of animals, this kakemono is an appealing addition.
