Kakemono Puppy and New Year's Sun Under a Pine Tree

A small, plump puppy sits playfully on a meadow, its head tilted slightly, gazing curiously into the distance. In the background, a large, rosy sun – most likely the first sunrise of the New Year (hatsuhinode) – glows softly over gentle hills, and a single pine tree rises slender, its needles finely rendered. On the ground, a few dark leaves and delicate grasses surround the scene, lending the whole a warm, homely atmosphere. The composition radiates childlike innocence and the quiet beauty of a New Year's morning. The signature 廣年試筆 marks the picture as the first brushwork of the new year (shihitsu); dog and pine are popular New Year motifs, and the box label names 狗 ("dog").

Painted on paper, the unique work displays a gentle palette of warm browns, grays, and pinks that make the puppy's furry body appear soft and lively. The jikusaki made of wood frame the picture in a traditional and natural way. This hand-painted piece brings a playful, soothing note to any room and appeals especially to lovers of Japanese animal depictions who value fine brushwork and a heartfelt, poetic expression.
