Description

With her head slightly tilted and a thoughtful expression, the beauty depicted in this kakemono looks to the side – her elaborately arranged hair, adorned with a red ribbon, and the red kimono collar set bold accents of color against the light paper ground. The image belongs to the tradition of bijin-ga, the depiction of idealized female beauty, which enjoyed great popularity in Japanese painting of the Meiji period.

The fine lines of the face and the carefully worked-out details of the hairstyle attest to the painter's skill in depicting human figures, a genre that requires great technical precision. The scene is painted on paper, in a restrained, warm color palette.

The hanging scroll is delivered including its own wooden box, which stores and protects it in style. This kakemono is an appealing choice for anyone with a passion for traditional Japanese portrait painting.
