Description
Arranged in several evenly spaced columns, this calligraphy kakemono extends across the entire height of the picture, with larger and smaller characters arranged in a pleasant, rhythmic alternation. The confident, flowing brushwork reveals a practiced hand and lends the text a pleasant lightness despite its density.
In terms of content, this is a poem about the plum blossom in the cold spring – a classic theme of East Asian poetry that celebrates the first delicate blossoms as a symbol of resilience and hope amid the cold of winter. The matte green border of the hanging scroll and the warm, cream-colored picture ground form a fitting frame for this poetic text.
The calligraphy was written by hand on paper in the Shôwa period. For lovers of Japanese poetry and calligraphy, this kakemono is a particularly evocative piece that puts the anticipation of spring into words.
