Description

A short, powerfully written text carries the meaning "A cluster of purple-gold light illuminates mountains and rivers" (紫金光聚照山河) – a Buddhist phrase, for 紫金光聚 denotes the golden radiance of the Buddha that lights up the whole world of mountains and rivers. The sheet is signed 勅寺法雲 光佑 … 衲書, the signature of a Zen monk; the seal 前住大徳 identifies him as a former abbot of Daitoku-ji.

The brushwork combines thick, rich foundational strokes with faster connecting lines, so that the characters themselves seem to develop a certain luminosity, fitting the light phenomenon described. In Zen Buddhism, the image of purple-gold light illuminating mountains and rivers stands for the all-pervading enlightenment of the Buddha, present in every landscape.

Such a calligraphy hanging scroll is suitable as evocative wall decoration for anyone who feels drawn to the imagery of Zen Buddhism.
