Description

Some calligraphies achieve their effect not through complex pictorial motifs, but through the power of the script alone – as is the case with this work bearing the poetic title Calligraphy "Breeze in Moonlight". The few characters tell of a quiet nocturnal moment, in which a light wind sweeps across a moonlit landscape.

The calligrapher rendered the characters in a flowing, cursive hand, in which individual strokes merge into one another, creating a kind of movement within the image itself – almost as if the brushwork mirrored the wind of which the words speak. A red seal completes the composition and confirms the authorship of the work.

Such calligraphies were traditionally hung in the tokonoma, the wall niche of Japanese living spaces, and changed according to the season or occasion. For lovers of Japanese calligraphy and quiet, poetic motifs, this kakemono is a calm yet expressive choice.
