Description

With a loose, spontaneous brushwork in pure ink, the painter created this hanging scroll: several chrysanthemum plants in varying flower forms grow from a rocky shore, accompanied by slender blades of grass reflected in the painted water. The technique of pure ink painting allows for a subtle interplay of light and dark tones of gray, lending the motif remarkable depth.

The chrysanthemum is one of the four noble plants of East Asian painting and symbolizes longevity as well as an unyielding resilience that defies autumn. Precisely in its reduced, monochrome execution, it appears especially powerful and at the same time meditative here, far from any excess.

The work, executed on paper, was created in the Shôwa period and testifies to a high mastery of ink technique, which lends the image a rich pictorial effect despite its few color nuances. For collectors of traditional Japanese ink painting, this hanging scroll titled Chrysanthemums on the Shore in Pure Ink is a stylish yet understated statement.
