Description

The calligraphy of this kakemono reads in romaji as 'Karyobinga' and denotes a mythical creature from Buddhism, depicted with a human head and the body of a bird, also known under the Sanskrit name Kalavinka.

According to legend, this creature possesses a voice of incomparable beauty, proclaiming even the pure teachings of the Buddha in a melodious way. The characters are executed in a clear, easily legible hand, lending a dignified frame to this exotic and at the same time spiritually significant subject. Terms from Buddhist cosmology in particular were often written in calligraphy with special care and restraint.

The kakemono is in good condition and is suitable both as an object of study for Buddhist symbolism and as stylish wall decoration. For collectors interested in the connection between calligraphy and Buddhist mythology, this work is an unusual and enriching discovery.
