Description

Veiled by a wide, gray-blue cloak with a richly floral pattern, a courtly dressed female figure strides through the picture. An elaborate headdress with golden ornaments and a red band holds the veil, which drapes elegantly over her shoulders, while she carries a fan in her hand. In the background, loosely painted bamboo stalks and a tree suggest a Japanese garden landscape.

The depiction is reminiscent of figures from classical Nō theater or of court ladies of past eras, as they were often used in Japanese painting as a symbol of elegance and grace. The motif was painted in the Shōwa period on silk, framed by a magnificent gold-colored brocade border with a crest pattern, which lends the work a representative, almost ceremonial character. The picture support is mounted on a rod made of bone.

With its calm, cultivated pictorial language and the elaborate textile mounting, this kakemono is a particularly stylish example of figurative Japanese hanging scroll art and an elegant addition to any collection.
