Kakemono Cranes Before Mount Fuji (in the Tradition of the Kano School)

With fine restraint and consummate balance, this kakemono from the late Meiji period shows two cranes lingering in quiet grace before the majestic Fuji. The subdued coloring and generous emptiness let the eye come to rest, while the precise execution on fine silk reflects the high standard of traditional Japanese painting. The jikusaki made of bone underscore the noble character of the work.

The painting bears the seals of Kano Eishin and Kano Yoshinobu, but was not created by these masters themselves. The seals presumably stem from respect for the artistic tradition or serve as a deliberate reference to the style of the famous Kano school, whose influence continued to resonate long after the active period of the named artists. Such signatures and seals were often used by students or later successors to emphasize their affiliation with this esteemed painting tradition.

This work is an evocative example of the connection between natural motifs and symbolic meaning: the cranes stand for longevity and good fortune, the Fuji for permanence and grandeur. Together they unfold a timeless appeal that captivates collectors and lovers of classical Japanese art alike.
