Description

A bird with a strikingly patterned head plumage sits attentively before a moss-covered rock, above it the leaves of a maple branch glow in a rich orange-red. The fine feather rendering and the high-contrast coloring lend the scene an autumnal, almost tangible atmosphere.

The kakemono was created in the Shôwa period, hand-painted on paper; the jikusaki is made of wood and harmoniously complements the traditional mounting of the hanging scroll.

The combination of bird and autumn foliage is one of the classic kachô-ga motifs of Japanese painting, celebrating the change of seasons and the beauty of the moment. This expressive kakemono is excellently suited for anyone who is enthusiastic about the fine powers of observation and the painterly tradition of Japanese nature and bird depiction, and who is looking for an atmospheric, autumnal-feeling work.
