Description

In this kakemono, a bird with a white head has settled among blossoming plum branches, its dark plumage forming an appealing contrast to the delicate blossoms around it. The bird looks attentively to the side, as if a sound or movement on the ground had caught its attention.

The blossoms are suggested with brief, loosely placed brushstrokes, while the branches were rendered with stronger, darker lines – a typical stylistic device of kachō-ga painting used to set foreground and background apart from one another.

The reduced color palette of black and gray, enlivened only by the soft green of the bamboo leaves and the orange of beak and legs, lends the scene a calm, almost wintry clarity despite the blossoming branch. Birds on blossoming branches are among the most popular combinations in Japanese bird-and-flower painting, as they symbolically capture the change of seasons and the transience of beauty. The inscription 歳寒二友 ('the two friends of the cold season') names plum and bamboo, which defy the winter and stand as emblems of steadfastness.

For lovers of classic nature motifs, this kakemono is an evocative addition.
