Description
On finely speckled, warm-toned paper sits a thickly applied, earthy-looking ink circle – the enso, whose slightly open form leaves room for the viewer's own interpretation. The shimmering paper texture gives the background an aged appearance, lending additional depth to the classic motif.
To the left of the circle runs a brief, powerfully rendered line of calligraphy that underscores the interplay of form and emptiness. The kakemono bears the signature and seal of the calligrapher Fukumoto Sekisho and was created in the Shôwa period; the mounting, with gold-colored ornamental bands and lotus pattern, gives the work painted on paper a festive frame, complemented by a jikusaki made of wood.
The enso is among the best-known motifs of Zen calligraphy and is often associated with completion, infinity, or the beauty of imperfection. This hand-painted unique work brings this quiet symbolic power into living or meditation spaces and is an impressive testament to the art of Japanese calligraphy.
