Description
In just a few loosely applied ink tones, Fuji rises from a sea of clouds – a depiction of great restraint that nevertheless conveys the full grandeur of the sacred mountain.
The painting on paper draws its life from the deliberate emptiness of the surrounding surface, giving the viewer room to breathe, while a few dark wisps of cloud play around the summit. The delicate linework at the peak and the ink-blurred clouds create an appealing contrast between precision and suggestion, fully in the spirit of classical suiboku painting. The work bears the signature and seal of the painter Okamoto.
Dating from the Meiji period, the kakemono is delivered including a separately signed wooden box – a reduced, meditative Fuji motif for lovers of classical ink painting.
