Description

In this expansive landscape panorama, Fuji-san rises in soft gray tones from a wide, mist-shrouded plain. The majestic silhouette of the mountain appears almost dreamlike and remote, as delicate layers of cloud settle over its flanks. On the right, a formation of wild geese moves quietly across the dawning sky, their flight leading directly toward the rising sun, visible as a bright, round glow in the mist. On the left lie a pagoda temple and a small village at the edge of gently curving hills – a calm counterpart to the open expanse on the right side.

In the lower area, a quiet everyday scene unfolds: fishermen in small boats, houses with thatched roofs, and individual figures who appear occupied along the shore. These details lend the large-scale landscape a subtle human dimension. The delicate ink painting, working in soft transitions, lets architecture, mountains, and water merge into a harmonious continuum.

The hanging scroll dates from the Meiji period and is painted on silk. The jikusaki are made of bone, and a stamp refers to Kano Zuizen. With its exceptional width of 97 cm, this kakemono departs from the usual format and thereby appears all the more striking. It is a work that unites calm and expanse in a rarely seen, elegant format.
