Description

A bearded hermit with wild hair crouches on the ground beside a rock, while a warty, mottled toad sits on his shoulder with a wisp of vapor rising from it – the classic motif of Gama Sennin, the toad immortal of Taoist legend. The hanging scroll bears a signature and seal. The folds of the coarse robe and the striking facial expression of the old man are rendered with strong, confident lines, while the toad is characterized with a finer brushstroke. Depictions of Gama Sennin show the toad as his constant companion, associated with the hermit and symbolizing his special spiritual powers. The immediate, almost humorous familiarity between man and toad makes this sheet a vivid example of classical figure painting.
