Description

Beneath dense, summer-green foliage crouches a thatched farmhouse, while a small figure with a bundle of brushwood on its back walks along the path in front of it. The soft tones of green, ochre, and brown, blurred in watercolor manner, create a warm, hazy summer atmosphere.

Such rural genre scenes were highly popular in Japanese painting, as they idealize simple, nature-bound country life and offer the viewer a nostalgic place of retreat. The tall reed stalks at the right edge of the image and the hazy background reinforce the impression of a quiet summer day.

The painting bears the signature and seal of Hayashi Fumito and was created in the Shôwa period. Painted on paper and fitted with a jikusaki made of bone, this hand-painted unique work is an atmospheric, warm-hearted depiction of landscape.
