Description
A delicate cherry branch bends down into the picture plane from above, as if reaching out toward the viewer. The white blossoms, set singly and in small clusters, glow softly against the warm gold tone of the silk ground. Closed pink buds alternate with already opened blossoms, telling of the fleeting moment of blooming – that instant which, in Japanese sensibility, stands for the transience of all beauty.
The composition is of extraordinary stillness and elegance: no superfluous element distracts, the long, curving branches follow a natural lightness, and the coloring remains deliberately restrained. This quality of reduction is a hallmark of mature Japanese painting.
The painting bears the signature and seal of Kawachi Juzan (川地寿山) and was created in the Showa period. Executed on silk, it is accompanied by a signed wooden box. The mounting in blue-green brocade fabric as well as the jikusaki made of bone lend this hand-painted unique work a particularly refined overall character.
