Description

With an alert gaze and raised head feathers, a bird with brilliant blue plumage perches on a slender, bare branch that curves softly through the picture. A few orange leaves hang low at the end of the branch, setting a warm accent of color against the cool blue of the plumage.

The reduced, almost sketch-like composition, with much open space around the central motif, is characteristic of classical Japanese bird painting, in which a single, precisely observed animal is enough to create an entire mood. The narrow, straight branch appears almost like a calligraphic line.

Painted on paper and mounted in fine gold brocade with a floral vine pattern, with wooden roller rods, this kakemono bears the painter's signature at the lower edge of the picture. A finely painted unique work from the Shôwa period, distinguished by its clear coloring and calm composition.
