Description

A medium-sized, black lacquered tea container (Chu-Natsume), the lid and body of which are decorated with paulownia leaves and flower sprays (kiri) and bamboo leaves (take) in orange and gold, linked by fine golden scrollwork.

This Natsume is the work of Heian Koshun.

The leaves are rendered in varying shapes and gradations of color, from delicate yellow to vivid orange, creating the impression of a gentle breeze carrying the leaves across the surface. Paulownia and bamboo (kiri-take) are a classic, auspicious pairing of motifs in Japanese lacquer art that is not tied to any particular season.

The container comes in a wooden box signed by the master, making it a stylish utensil for the tea ceremony as well as a decorative collector's item.
