Description

In this hanging scroll, a narrow waterfall descends over the silk from top to bottom with powerful elegance. Suggested in soft tones of gray and black, the water streams down between rocky formations, their structure outlined with only a few but precise brushstrokes. Among the flowing lines, a few green maple leaves drift – a subtle contrast that makes both movement and stillness palpable.

The painting technique attests to a deep mastery of ink painting: transparent layers, flowing transitions, and deliberately placed empty spaces make the fall of the water seem almost audible. The motif combines the dynamism of nature with the contemplative calm of classical Japanese landscape depictions.

Painted on silk, with jikusaki of wood, dated to the Meiji period. The seal points to Matsukuma Gayama. The work is kept in a matching wooden box.
